# Physical disability support at home

Independence is not doing everything yourself. It is deciding how everything gets done.

The people we support here are usually not confused about what they want. They know exactly how their day should run and what their body will not let them do unaided. Our role is to close that specific gap and then get out of the way.

## What kind of help do adults with physical disabilities get at home?

Support is built around the specific gap between what the person wants to do and what their body allows unaided. Most plans cover safe transfers between bed, chair, bathroom, and vehicle, help with bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting, meal preparation adapted to dietary needs, light housekeeping that keeps pathways clear, and errands or shopping. The person receiving care directs how each task is done.

## Who this is for

Adults living with congenital or acquired physical disabilities, including spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, amputation, and stroke-related mobility loss.

### Where we provide it

## What a caregiver actually does.

### Mobility and transfers

Safe assistance moving from bed to wheelchair, to the restroom, or to a vehicle, using proper technique to prevent falls and strain on both people.

### Personal hygiene

Respectful help with bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting, at the pace and in the order the person prefers.

### Meal preparation

Cooking meals that meet dietary restrictions, and assistance with feeding when that is needed.

### An accessible home

Keeping pathways clear and the home organized so the environment stops working against the person living in it.

### Errands and shopping

Grocery runs and prescription pickups, so travel is not a barrier to the basics.

### Direction from the person, not about them

You decide how the help happens. A caregiver who takes over is a caregiver who has misunderstood the job.

## Questions about Physical disability.

Call (636) 378-7455 if yours is not answered here.

### Can the caregiver help me get to work or class?

Transportation and errand support are part of the service. Bring your actual weekly schedule to the assessment so we can staff around it rather than around a generic day.

### I direct my own care. Will your caregivers follow that?

Yes, and it makes the work better. Tell us at the assessment exactly how you want each task done and we will write it into the plan so it survives a caregiver change.
