# Parkinson's care at home

Parkinson's does not run on your schedule. Care that ignores the on and off cycle is care that fights the disease.

The difference between a good day and a hard one with Parkinson's is often just timing. A caregiver who knows when the medication window opens can front-load a shower, a walk, and a meal into the hours where the body cooperates, and lower the demands during the hours it does not.

## How does in-home care help with Parkinson's specifically?

By building the day around the medication cycle instead of around a fixed schedule. Bathing, dressing, walking, and appointments get placed in the on periods when movement is easier. During off periods, the caregiver adds physical support for transfers and freezing episodes rather than pushing the person to perform. Steady daily support also helps manage fall risk, which is a common reason people with Parkinson's end up in hospital.

## Who this is for

Adults living with Parkinson's disease at any stage, and their spouses, who are usually managing transfers that have become physically unsafe for them to do alone.

## What a caregiver actually does.

### Timing care to the medication cycle

Demanding tasks in the on windows, support and patience in the off windows. This one adjustment changes more than any other.

### Freezing and transfer support

Physical assistance and verbal cueing through freezing episodes, and safe help moving between bed, chair, toilet, and car.

### Fall prevention in the home

Rugs, cords, thresholds, bathroom grab points, and lighting reviewed during the assessment. Most Parkinson's falls happen at home in a known room.

### Meals and swallowing safety

Meal preparation adapted to swallowing difficulty, upright positioning, and unhurried mealtimes.

### Dressing and hygiene, unhurried

Tremor and rigidity make buttons and zippers a daily humiliation. We give the time it takes and let the person do what they still can.

### Medication reminders on the clock

Parkinson's medications lose effectiveness when doses drift. We prompt on the exact schedule the neurologist set.

## Questions about Parkinson's.

Call (636) 378-7455 if yours is not answered here.

### Do you help with exercise routines?

We support and encourage the routine a physical therapist or a program like LSVT BIG has already prescribed. We do not design exercise programs ourselves. Bring the therapist's instructions to the assessment and we will build them into the daily schedule.

### My spouse is the one hurting their back doing transfers. Can you help with that?

That is a very common reason families call, and it is usually the point where care should have started months earlier. Transfer support is core to what we do, and it protects two people at once.
